Structured Literacy Foundations: Vocabulary & Comprehension

This course provides educators with a comprehensive exploration of Structured Literacy, an evidence-based approach to reading grounded in the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Participants will learn how skilled reading develops and how to design instruction that is explicit, systematic, and responsive to student needs. The course examines effective practices for vocabulary instruction, including morphology, context routines, and strategies that build both depth and breadth of word knowledge. Educators will also explore evidence-aligned comprehension strategies that emphasize language development, background knowledge, text structure, and strategic thinking, all within the framework of the Simple View of Reading. By the end of the course, participants will have a strong conceptual foundation and practical tools to implement structured, equitable, and effective literacy instruction across grade levels.
